LXX
THE PROBLEM OF THOUGHT
J. J. Rousseau
One must not think, since there is a risk
of sinning without realizing it; the evil
Enemy follows us and will often sneak
into the soul which is not protected
by the faith of a religious order
with its beliefs sprinkled on at baptism,
by a faith which is blind or religious,
which in the final analysis is the same.
What killed faith was the inordinate desire
for knowledge, which is a very bad habit;
there is no way to enforce the abstinence
from thought; there must be no uncertainty;
God gave us the ability to think as a test.
Lucky he who doesn’t realize he’s taking it!
